Sermon based on Psalm 137: 1-4, Psalm 40: 1-3 and Matthew 26:30.
God gives us a new song. He puts a new song in our heart. The Devil can’t stand it and will do anything to shut us up. When we don’t feel like singing we must do it anyway. When the Devil takes your song, he steals your joy, and then he has taken your strength (the joy of the Lord is your strength). When strength is gone he tries to steal your victory. Ephesians 5:18 -19 tells us to be filled with the Spirit singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Jesus is our example. We have to keep “singing”. Encourage ourselves and others with His Word and our testimony.

A name sticks with the person, it identifies them, and it shows their position or authority in life. God changed the name of some people, for example Abram to Abraham and Jacob to Israel. Here Jacob changed the name of the child from Benoni meaning “son of my sorrow” to Benjamin meaning” son of my right hand” The blood of Jesus changes us completely. It transforms our identity into what He wants us to become.

The Cross of Christ is the heart of the Gospel. All our teaching must relate to that like all the spokes and rim and tires of a wheel relate to the axis. Jesus is the center, the pivot. Everything else will fit into place around Jesus. Indeed the entire word of God revolves around Him. If Christ is not the hub the wheel will wobble and break. People say that we Christians are eccentric. An eccentric object wobbles around a point that is off-center. But that is what the Bible calls "the world." It is not believers, evangelists, witnesses or Christians who are eccentric, but the world. The world wobbles as it revolves around itself, but the believer is centered on God. When people in the Church talk about ‘making the gospel relevant’, they usually mean that we need to show that the gospel has something in common with the world of industry, entertainment and commerce. They have things back to front. The question is not whether the message can be related to this world, but whether the world is willing to relate to the message of the Cross. I was thinking of Peter and John at the tomb examining the grave clothes of the risen Christ. It never crossed their minds that they might display the blood-marked wrappings as evidence of His death, like holy relics to be kissed and touched. They had better things to do! Jesus Christ told Philip to feed 5000 men in a breadless wilderness. He took fishermen and told them “As you go, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers”. Nobody had ever done such things. He commanded a paralyzed man “Take up your bed and walk”, and to a corpse “Young man I say to you, ‘Arise!’” and to an entombed man “Lazarus, come forth!”. They all did just what He said. God gives us a new song. He puts a new song in our heart. The Devil can’t stand it and will do anything to shut us up. When we don’t feel like singing we must do it anyway. When the Devil takes your song, he steals your joy, and then he has taken your strength (the joy of the Lord is your strength). When strength is gone he tries to steal your victory. Ephesians 5:18 -19 tells us to be filled with the Spirit singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Jesus is our example. We have to keep “singing”. Encourage ourselves and others with His Word and our testimony.

A name sticks with the person, it identifies them, and it shows their position or authority in life. God changed the name of some people, for example Abram to Abraham and Jacob to Israel. Here Jacob changed the name of the child from Benoni meaning “son of my sorrow” to Benjamin meaning” son of my right hand” The blood of Jesus changes us completely. It transforms our identity into what He wants us to become.

If you want to catch fish, don’t throw the net into a bathtub. There is no fish. You may perhaps catch a piece of soap in there. If you want to catch fish take your net and cast it into the river or sea. That is where the fish is. We need to re-learn to seek the lost by going to the highways and byways. God makes new things. He does not touch things up. Any true artist would rather paint a brand new picture than putting somebody else’s work right. God is not interested in making the best of a bad job. He starts all over again. He does not mask the cracks in a ceramic vase. He makes a new one on the potter’s wheel. God is the Creator – always. ‘We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works’. That recreating Spirit is a life of constant renewal and always at work - even today. God bless you. The Cross of Christ is the heart of the Gospel. All our teaching must relate to that like all the spokes and rim and tires of a wheel relate to the axis. Jesus is the center, the pivot. Everything else will fit into place around Jesus. Indeed the entire word of God revolves around Him. If Christ is not the hub the wheel will wobble and break. People say that we Christians are eccentric. An eccentric object wobbles around a point that is off-center. But that is what the Bible calls "the world." It is not believers, evangelists, witnesses or Christians who are eccentric, but the world. The world wobbles as it revolves around itself, but the believer is centered on God. When people in the Church talk about ‘making the gospel relevant’, they usually mean that we need to show that the gospel has something in common with the world of industry, entertainment and commerce. They have things back to front. The question is not whether the message can be related to this world, but whether the world is willing to relate to the message of the Cross. I was thinking of Peter and John at the tomb examining the grave clothes of the risen Christ. It never crossed their minds that they might display the blood-marked wrappings as evidence of His death, like holy relics to be kissed and touched. They had better things to do! Jesus Christ told Philip to feed 5000 men in a breadless wilderness. He took fishermen and told them “As you go, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers”. Nobody had ever done such things. He commanded a paralyzed man “Take up your bed and walk”, and to a corpse “Young man I say to you, ‘Arise!’” and to an entombed man “Lazarus, come forth!”. They all did just what He said.
